Shashi Kapoor

Shashi Kapoor an Indian film actor and producer was born on 18th March 1938 and died on 4th December 2017. His original name was Balbir Prithviraj Kapoor. He was a dynamic personality in Indian film industry. Kapoor family, a dynasty in the film industry and Shashi Kapoor was the famous member of this dynasty.  After Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, he was the third and the youngest son of Prithviraj Kapoor. He acted in many plays which were directed by his father moreover he appeared in a large number of Hindi films. Hindi cinema is modest to lose his filmy hero on 4th December.

He was born in Calcutta during British Raj which present day is named Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Aag in 1948 and Awaara in 1951 were his best-known performances as a child actor. As a child artist, he played roles in four Hindi films from 1948 to 1954.

Shashi Kapoor attended Don Bosco High School in Mumbai. He practiced theater artist in his father’s theatre Prithvi theatre. He met Jennifer Kendal in Calcutta where both were working as theatre artist but Shashi Kapoor with his theatre group and Jennifer Kendal with her mother Geoffrey Kendal’s Shakespearean group.

Due to which they started meeting each other frequently and slowly fall in love with each other. After opposition and subsequent meeting, they tie a knot in July 1958. After that in Merchant Ivory productions, they acted together. Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer established Prithvi theatre on 5th November 1978 in Mumbai. But the death of Jennifer due to cancer in 1984 shattered him a lot.

Children

Kapoor family got the cute young and smart children. But due to the European look of children, they were not able to put their best foot forward in Indian film industry. Though they all have a great career, his son Kunal Kapoor did his great work on to ad film director and he established his production house Adfilm-Vilas which is now on today’s date is extremely successful.

His younger son Karan Kapoor is a successful model and an accomplished photographer lives in London. And his daughter Sanjana is a theatre artist and marries to a wildlife conservationist.

Career

Dharmputra was the film in which Shashi Kapoor made his debut in 1961 and then his journey started and did 116 Hindi films in which 61 films as a solo lead hero. His early films were Dharmputra, Prem Patra, and Char Diwari and after that, he worked in English language films named The Householder and Shakespeare-Wallah.  He was one of India’s first actors to work internationally. In 1960’s Shashi Kapoor acted in many romantic Hindi films including Jab Jab Phool Khile in 1965, Raja Saab in 1969 and Rootha Na Karo in 1970 opposite Nanda.

Early 1970’s and 1980’s

He played role in many Hindi films with the most beautiful and talented actresses named Raakhee, Sharmila Tagore and Zeenat Aman.  He paired a great chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan with the total of 12 films including Deewaar in 1975. Kabhie Kabhie, Kala Pathar, Do Aur Do Paanch and Silsila.

These are the movies whose dialogues are uttered by every person now also. Shashi Kapoor was the second highest paid actor. He regarded Rajesh Khanna and Sanjeev Kapoor as the most talented and dynamic actors of Indian film industry.


Career 1990’s

By the late 1990’s he retired from the Indian cinema. His last movie was Jinnah which was a biopic on Mohammed Ali Jinnah in 1998. He did another Merchant Ivory production that is Side Streets in 1998 and after that, he has not appeared in any film. In Oman, Muscat Shashi Kapoor came in limelight in The Shashi Kapoor Film Festival in September 2007. He received Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award at the 55th Annual Filmfare awards.

Death

Shashi Kapoor was suffering from the Liver Cirrhosis. He took his last breath at Kokilaben Hospital, Mumbai on 4th December 2017 for a chest infection. He died at the age of 79 at 5:20 pm and was suffering from Kidney failure.  Now his son and daughter take care of Prithvi theatre.

He is an inspiration and motivation for all of us. He worked hard and get awards all through his work.
